Pre-Vacation Jitters ________________________________________________________________
Michael met his sales goals for the entire cluster of radio stations, so the company is flying him (and me) to Portland for an awards dinner. He thought we could turn it into a late anniversary trip by bringing me along and taking a few extra days. It's been years since I've been out of state. Since before Xander was born. At first I wasn't that excited. I knew I would be once we got there, but the anticipation always gets me.

My friend, Shawna, has been so wonderful in reassuring me and I've finally let myself start to look forward to it. In between bouts of guilt and self doubt.

As I've been busy worrying about our vacation, I have been rather lax in getting the kids' costumes together for Halloween. I went to Walmart this week thinking it would be no problem. Well, they 5 aisles of Christmas items, but one of Halloween. Color me confused. Riley wants to be Scully from The X-Files. Trench coat. Check. Slacks and nice blouse. Check. FBI badge. Check. Red wig? Red wig? Well, all Walmart had was this. I thought maybe I could undo the braids and trim it up a bit. Then Riley tried it on and said, ""Welcome to Wendy's. Would you like to try our Baconator today?" and I lost my mind! I found a better wig today. Color and style is right, but it has tinsel in it, but whatever. We'll make it work.

Emily changed her mind a million times but finally settled on being a ghost. An eight dollar sheet and she's good to go. Maggie is recycling what she wore last year only wants to add vampire fangs. Timothy came up with the idea of being a werebat. I'm not sure what that is exactly, but it involved wings and pointy ears. I struck out yesterday, but I went to the over priced party store today (along with the rest of city) but all I could find was a werewolf mask and a dog's bat costume. It was all good until Tim's sister pointed out that fact after he tried it on. He was shocked, but in the end, he admired my ingenuity and I think we're all good. Xander is Batman. Natch. I tried to talk Tim into being The Joker, but (shock) he didn't want to be a villain.

Emily was lamenting this morning that it's so cold here and wished we lived in New York where I grew up so it would be fall and the leaves would be turning instead of being 6 degrees above zero and a foot of snow on the ground. Poor kid. This is the first year they aren't excited to go trudging from house to house in the cold. There are places around town having events and giving out candy, but they won't get as much. Usually their goal is to see how much candy they can aquire within the 2.5 hours we Trick or Treat. It could be a different story this year!
